Together, We are Changing Relicensure Process
At the 2011 RA, the membership directed the Association to develop a simplified approach for relicensing teachers, since the current system is cumbersome, time-consuming, and insufficiently connected to professional growth. Jumping to most recent efforts, this past December, the Association announced simplifying that process as part of a larger and ambitious agenda addressing ways to help educators in their work with children. In January, we asked our members what they thought of IPLPs and portfolios as part of the process. In unprecedented numbers, the responses came in and were overwhelmingly (90% of those responding) in favor of eliminating those components of the process. We took our case (and those numbers) into the State House and before the Professional Standards Board. On March 19, that board unanimously adopted a motion that will set in motion changes in the relicensing rules, including removing IPLPs and portfolios from the process. We had hoped this would become official as of this July 1, but the rule-changing process extends at least 8 months. We are seeking early confirmation from the Standards Board that active teachers up for relicensing during FY 2015 will not be required to develop IPLPs and portfolios.
