America's Best: Vermont-NEA President Praises State's Rankings on National Reading Tests
MONTPELIER – News that Vermont’s students are at or near the best in the nation in reading is a testament to the state’s outstanding public school system, the president of the state’s largest union said Wednesday.
“The men and women who teach our children should be extremely proud of their students, who, once again, outperformed their peers across the country,” Vermont-NEA President Martha Allen said. “It is clear that education is indeed a partnership between professional and qualified educators and motivated students.”
According to the so-called Nation’s Report Card, Vermont’s eighth-graders posted the best reading scores in the country, while fourth-graders from the Green Mountain State ranked second, behind Massachusetts. These results come on the heels of this fall’s math scores, which showed that Vermont’s eighth-graders were second in the nation and fourth-graders ranked third.
“Vermonters invest in their local public schools, year after year, because they recognize the importance of hiring the best and brightest to teach their children,” Allen said. “It is gratifying – though not surprising – that Vermont’s students continue to achieve at such high levels.”
