Retirement Deal Now Law
Gov. James Douglas quietly signed into law the retirement deal that took months of work, thousands of e-mails, weeks of negotiations and, most importantly, the efforts from hundreds of you.
The retirement deal – held up as a national model by a respected news service – asks you to work a little longer, pay a little more in an effort to eliminate 10 percent of the state’s budget deficit. But, more importantly, it provides you with much more: a chance to earn a bigger pension, to achieve spousal health care and to ensure the continued fiscal strength of your six-decades-old defined benefits system.
As you know, the deal’s ramifications are large, and its individual effects on each of you is different. Please stay tuned for even more details in the weeks and months ahead by checking back to our
retirement resources page often. And don’t forget that your association is in the midst of a
retirement road show, where you can ask questions and get answers.
Again, this achievement is extraordinary, and it demonstrates how important it is to stick together and fight for what is right – right for you, right for your students, right for taxpayers and right for Vermont.
